So I used to board at a barn that stuff just seemed to happen to poor innocent horses more often than needed. Well today I heard from a friend from my old barn. His adorable paint mare got hurt on Friday. The vet told him that his choices were 1. long drawn out medicine treatments that may not work and will be very expensive 2. put her down or 3. remove her eye. How could you deal with that choice? I would die if that was my Brown Cow! He also found out that people have been using his horse at their leisure and she has not been treated right for quite sometime. He is a firefighter so he does make it out often to ride but he loves her to death. She is soooo sweet and these idiots were able to mess her head up so bad that she reared with him which NEVER happened before. Just wow! I needed to ge that out!

Hi Sunshineglow, What a SAD story!!! People are so stupid when it comes to horses!!! I hope he sues them. Money is the only punishment (most of the time) that stops inhumane/stupid treatment. This is a important story for whoever has to board their horses. Sincerely, Janeen

I had to board my horse once upon a time back when she was 6 years old. she is now 23 years old. She kept losing weight. I complained about it but it seemed like no one would listen. They didn't want us bringing in any hay. They wanted to feed theirs. I showed up one day and hid so no one would see me. I showed up during feeding time. To my horror, they THREW only a half of flake at her!! I went to the foreman of the place and said I would find someplace else to board her - they were starving her. In the meantime, I went there twice a day myself and fed her. They didn't like it but I dared them to do anything. One other time I showed up and the kid that was supposed to clean the stalls, had a hose on my mare and was spraying her down. I screamed at him and he said she tried to bite him. This mare has always been the sweetest and would NEVER even think of biting anyone. I told them I would be the one cleaning her stall and for them to stay out. I got her out of there and into another place where she was very happy. We stayed there in the new place for about two years and then we bought our own place -- 2 acres.

When my horse was at the old barn I know she was not getting treated right. I started having problems with her being head shy and did not know what was up. I think she was getting clocked with buckets because I have no problems now. I have my horse at a wonderful place now! My next move will be to have her at home. i miss being able to just walk out and see my baby whenever I want to! First I have to get settled and then it will be all good!

***Update on Cutie***
Cutie was the little mare I was so upset about who got her eye messed up. I heard from one of the girls that has here horses out there in self care. She said that he ended up selling her to a girl out there who had the eye removed and she has continued to ride her. I guess she is doing pretty well. I was happy to hear that. I also found out that the lease on the barn is running up soon adn they will be losing that half of the property to developers. I am sad for that but happy that there will be less horses to be mistreated!
